The Ananias Calling On Every Believer

What does it take to make the impossible possible? Is it raw talent, a powerful calling, or an unstoppable anointing? The life of the Apostle Paul had all three, yet his world-changing journey began at a standstill, blinded on the road to Damascus. His mission seemed impossible before it even started. Sometimes, the key to unlocking our own impossible breakthrough lies in the hands of someone else. Paul was the spiritual giant, but it was a simple disciple named Ananias who was sent to open his eyes and set him on his path. Though not everyone is called to be a Paul, every single believer is called to be an Ananias—the one who helps make the impossible possible for another.
Paul: The Making of a Spiritual Giant
To understand the power of Ananias, we must first appreciate the sheer scale of the man he was sent to help. Paul was no ordinary figure; he was a "chosen vessel" (Acts 9:15), handpicked by God to carry the Gospel to Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. His calling was immense, his capabilities were extraordinary, and his anointing was world-changing.
Paul operated in the full spectrum of the fivefold ministry—apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher. He wasn’t just a church planter; he was a transformer of civilization. Yet, he knew that gifts are just the engine. The fuel is the anointing—the divine power that makes supernatural things happen. Even with this incredible spiritual arsenal, Paul’s journey began with an impossible roadblock, and he could not move forward alone.
A Divine Detour: The Damascus Encounter
The transformation of Saul of Tarsus began with a blinding light. In the blink of an eye, the once fearsome persecutor of Christians was rendered helpless and blind. While in that place of total vulnerability, Jesus didn’t give him the full plan. He gave Saul a simple instruction: “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do” (Acts 9:6).
Here lies a critical principle: God often uses people to deliver His plans. The Lord directed Paul to Ananias, a man the Bible simply calls "a certain disciple" (Acts 9:10). Ananias was not famous or high-ranking by any means, nor did he have the same calling that Paul did; but this humble disciple held the keys to unlocking Paul’s impossible situation.
Ananias: The Key to the Impossible
The story of Paul’s breakthrough is, in reality, the story of Ananias’s obedience. While Jesus appeared to Paul on the road, it was Ananias who served as the vital instrument of his physical and spiritual transformation through four pivotal acts:
Ananias laid hands on Paul and healed him, “immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once” (Acts 9:18, NKJV). Without Ananias, the man who would write two-thirds of the New Testament might have remained in darkness for the rest of his life.
Ananias baptized Paul, officially bringing the former persecutor into the family of God and ensuring he didn't just have an experience, but a commitment; as the scripture says, “he arose and was baptized” (Acts 9:18, NKJV).
It was also Ananias who laid hands on Paul to be filled with the Holy Spirit, telling him, “the Lord Jesus... has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 9:17, NKJV). This provided the divine fuel and power that would later define Paul’s ministry.
Most remarkably, it was Ananias who prophesied over Paul to release him into his destiny, revealing that “the God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will... for you will be His witness to all men” (Acts 22:14-15, NKJV). The Eternal Reward of the Facilitator
The story of Ananias is a powerful reminder that in the Kingdom of God, there are no small role. Ananias doesn’t appear again in the biblical narrative after this encounter his supernatural encounter with Paul, but his impact is eternal. Every soul won, every church planted, and every life transformed through Paul is a credit to the faithfulness of Ananias.
The Bible says, “he who receives a prophet…shall receive a prophet’s reward” (Matthew 10:41). Ananias didn’t just receive Paul; he healed, empowered, and launched him. Therefore, Ananias shares in all of Paul’s eternal rewards. This is a powerful encouragement for everyone who serves behind the scenes. The mentor, the intercessor, the encourager—they are all “Ananiases” who will share in the harvest of the giants they help raise up.
Embracing Your Ananias Calling
Our culture celebrates the “Paul” figures—the leaders on the big stage. But while the world needs its Pauls, the Kingdom cannot function without its Ananiases. Being an Ananias requires humility and availability. It means being willing to invest in someone else’s success without needing any of the credit.
Your supreme calling is to make disciples (Matthew 28:19). This isn’t for a spiritual elite; it’s for every believer. It’s about being ready to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when He prompts you to reach out. Paul’s life was a divine masterpiece, but Ananias was the brush God used to paint the first strokes.
By investing in others, you can play a pivotal role in making the impossible possible in their lives.
The world may not remember the Ananiases, but heaven never forgets their names.
